Athens Community Wine Rating

Athens Community Wine Rating

Beginning Thursday, November 18th, Five Points and Aromas are starting an exciting new wine tasting series. Every Thursday we'll be hosting a tasting of eight wines for only $10 from 6pm to 8pm at Aromas. It's very casual; you can drop in at any point to taste some great bottles that you might not have ever tried.

And -- even more exciting -- every third Thursday of the month we'll be doing the same thing, eight wines for $10, but it will be a blind tasting. You, the customer, will rate the wines (in a rating system similar to Wine Spectator's). Then we will will aggregate the scores in order to get the Athens Community Wine Rating for each wine. These ratings, and any quotes or comments you may have about the wines, will be posted in both stores. This is a way for you to tell us, and your community, what wines you like and why.

The tasting on November 18th is the first blind tasting, and we're very excited about it. This is a way for you to rate and evaluate wines, and for us to share those results with your community. We hope you come!

New Wines

New Wines

If you're looking for a perfect bottle for Thanksgiving dinner, we've got your answer at Five Points. Zima Del Sios is a lovely tempranillo/merlot blend from Spain, and Alto Sios is its big brother, a delicious, juicy syrah/tempranillo blend. (Both were big hits at Ashford Manor last weekend!) These are both 1.5L bottles, and are not available anywhere else in the state. At $44.99 and $59.99 respectively, these are perfect for a large family gathering. Extremely limited supply. (Five Points location only.)

Shafer is back in the market after an absence of several years! We've got a limited supply of the 2007 Hillside Select Cabernet and the One Point Five Cabernet. Also, the 2007 Opus One has just been released and is available. Limited supply. (Available at both stores.)

Che Gaucho Malbec and Chardonnay are perfect party wines. The Chardonnay is very lightly oaked and the Malbec is fruit-forward and jammy. At $9.99 for a 1.5L, these are great easy drinking wines -- and the price is right! (Westside only.)

Sean Thackrey is an eclectic and unusual winemaker. An avid collector and translator of ancient wine texts, he attempts to make his wines in a very old style, employing open air fermentation and using a wide selection of varietals in his blends. The results are excellent, extremely complex wines that have generated a cult-like following. At the Westside we have Aquila (RP92), Orion (RP95), Pleiades, and Sirius (previous vintage RP96). For more information see www.wine-maker.net or check out the Wikipedia entry for Sean Thackrey. Very limited supply. (Westside only).
